What’s this little frog about?
Meet the coquí, the unofficial animal of Puerto Rico who serves as a cultural symbol. It makes a “co-KEE” sound, which explains its name. The coquí is native to Puerto Rico, although today it can also be found in places like Florida and Hawaii.
It’s a small brown frog about an inch and a half in length.
The coquí that you see here is actually a pictograph from the indigenous Taíno peoples that have long inhabited the Caribbean area.
Unlike other frogs, the coquí has free toes, not webbed feet, and it lays eggs that hatch into little fully formed frogs; it doesn’t have a tadpole stage!
The coquí inspires the Puerto Rican phrase, “Soy de aquí, como el coquí” (I’m from here, like the coquí)
